Community Skills Centre Self-Sufficient
The 1999-2000 year was again a challenging but relatively successful year for the Community Skills Centre.

The year 2000 marked the end of the five year period in which the federal and provincial governments had agreed to provide core funding to Community Skills Centres.

The Revelstoke Community Skills Centre was one of only six centres in the Province to declare itself financially self-sufficient at the end of the fiscal year. Given the small population base of our community and the lack of any local large employer, this must be considered a major achievement. With a reduction of just under $180,000 in core funding from the previous year, the number of participants in our training programs decreased from previous years, and the Society posted a small loss of just over $4,000 for the year. This loss was due to the fact the Board of Directors of the Society decided to invest over $40,000 in the community to assist our residents to access training and educational opportunities.

The Society acted as the proponent for the creation of a community economic and social development strategy in partnership with other agencies. These contributions to the community represent major successes for the Society.

A summary of major accomplishments for the year are listed below:
  • 747 participants attended Community Skills Centre training programs

  • 232 clients assisted to obtain employment through job placement and assisted job search programs
