New Telecommunications Infrastructure & Information Superhighway Connection
Officials of Telus Advanced Communications recently met with local telecommunication users and providers along with City Council to unveil plans for a major investment in telecommunications infrastructure that will provide Revelstoke with state of the art access to the information super highway.

This fall Telus will install an ATM switch at its Revelstoke facility that will provide the core areas of Revelstoke with telecommunications transmission capacity, speed and at a cost comparable to that now available in larger centres throughout North America.

The ATM switch will connect Revelstoke to Telus’ province-wide fibre optic network and to the state-of-the-art Canada wide fibre infrastructure.

The main applications of the ATM switch are for LAN (Local Area Networks) to LAN connectivity at 10 Mb/s and high speed (T-1 or greater) access to the internet.

What does access to the information super highway mean for Revelstoke:

  • Businesses relying on telecommunications will have enhanced access to network products and services faster, better, with more security and at a lower cost.

  • Local telecommunications providers such as ColumbiaNet and Cable T.V. will be able to purchase access to Telus’ telecommunications network at costs comparable to larger centres.

  • Residents will have improved access to the internet, however, until limitations in local telephone line capacity are overcome the speed of the transmission for subscribers using the telephone system will improve only slightly. Cablelan subscribers will enjoy the same speed of transmission as fibre-optic cable, however, individual modems may have to be upgraded to attain the speed of transmission made possible by the installation of the ATM Switch.

  • Revelstoke - as a place to live and do business will become more attractive particularly for businesses and individuals dependant on telecommunications for their income and/or livelihood. With the increasing flexibility of selecting where one lives and works, particularly for high-tech and information based business, Revelstoke will be able to offer telecommunication availability comparable to much larger centres. Marketing initiatives to take advantage of this enhanced capacity can now be developed.

More detailed information describing Telus Advanced Communications services (which will only be available after the installation of the ATM switch) can be obtained from the Enterprise Centre, 204 Campbell Avenue, Revelstoke or by calling 837-5345.

The Economic Development Commission would like to extend a warm thank you to all volunteers, and acknowledge the tremendous community work that was done in efforts to acquiring a “loading ramp to the information highway” for our community.
